Successful Surinam Day in Tilburg

Last Sunday a Surinam Day took place in the New Apostolic Church building in Tilburg. Over 160 people, and amongst them many people originating from Surinam, reacted on the invitation.

Visitors from Belgium and Holland were made welcome and treated to coffee/tea and cakes. Also present today was actress, singer and storyteller Mrs. Gerda Havertong.
Our vice-chairman Ruud Vis held a short presentation in which he gave some insight into Stichting Corantijn’s work in Surinam.

Next a church service was held in which we were all pleasantly surprised with joyful and swinging gospel music, performed by the Surinam Choir Pramisi. The members of the choir appeared in colorful dressings and looked wonderful. They sang passionately, of course in Sranan Tongo, and asked the visitors to join in. Many could no longer sit still. Together with the New Apostolic Church choir it created a great atmosphere.

Afterwards there was lunch in which, next to perkedel djagung (maïsbeignet), gado gado, white and yellow rice, sambal beans and various meat dishes, the famous Surinam saoto soup was prominent.

Stichting Corantijn was present with an information stand. A continual presentation was shown regarding Stichting Corantijn’s work in Surinam. Our secretary Marion van Berkum answered many questions. Those who were interested were very impressed with what they saw and heard. The response came with a large number of financial donations this afternoon.
